Alex Chalmers

I'm a staff writer at the Cosmos Institute, where I focus on how AI can be used to advance human autonomy, decentralization, and truth-seeking.

I also write a Substack, supported by Emergent Ventures, about the intersection of technology, finance, and policy. Topics so far have included private markets, the problems with the Alan Turing Institute, tax policy, defence, and energy.

Before joining Cosmos, I held a number of roles focused on writing, research, and policy. These included writing about industrial policy and nuclear power at Works In Progress and working with AI investor Nathan Benaich at Air Street Capital. At Air Street, I regularly co-wrote pieces on the technical and commercial aspects of AI and contributed to the 2023 and 2024 State of AI Report.

Alongside my work at Cosmos, I occasionally take on external commissions and I love meeting people who share some of my interests. The best way to get in touch is X, LinkedIn, or email.

I split my time between London and Riyadh and when I'm not working, I enjoy reading history and philosophy, running, improving my dismal chess rating, and visiting the amber areas on the Foreign Office travel advice map.
